En aquest article s’estudia la circulació d'estiu al sud-oest de la Península Ibèrica utilitzant dades d'un experiment de camp i simulacions numèriques realitzades amb el model de mesoscala no hidrostàtic, Meso-NH. Aquest model s’inicialitza i es força amb el model numèric de predicció del temps ARPEGE. Els camps de superfície i diversos paràmetres s’obtenen a partir d'una sèrie de fonts diferents i es validen amb les observacions i les integracions a llarg termini del model de superfície de la terra. Les simulacions numèriques capturen la major part de les característiques que es troben en les observacions de superfície i en capes superiors, i mostren la importància de la circulació de brisa marina dins el cicle diürn de la capa límit atmosfèrica a les regions de fins a més de 100 km de la costa. La naturalesa 3D de la circulació atmosfèrica a l'estiu sobre el sud de Portugal s'examina fent ús dels resultats d'una simulació d’un cas real de dos dies típics d'estiu. Es presenten també balanços en el model 3D, que s'utilitzen per aclarir la importància relativa dels fluxos turbulents i de l'advecció horitzontal en la dinàmica de la capa límit.
Aquest article va ser escrit el 2001. Per diverses raons mai va ser publicat, tot i que part del seu contingut es troba publicat en portuguès en la tesi doctoral del primer autor, defensada el 2006. El treball es va realitzar utilitzant una versió antiga de Meso-NH, però estem convençuts que els seus principals resultats són encara actuals, el que justifica la seva publicació en anglès en una revista científica internacional. Mentrestant, un dels autors, Joel Nolhan, va morir massa aviat. La publicació d'aquest manuscrit és també un petit homenatge a Joel i el seu llegat científic.
